Abstract
In apparatus for stretching sheet material comprising sets of grippers moving in divergent paths along guide rails, the gripper comprises sheet gripping means, a body-portion capable of being mounted on, and movable along the guide rail, and a stabilising arm which is mounted at its one end on the body portion at a point spaced apart from the guide rail, and at its other end is engaged with the guide rail or rails at a point which is spaced apart from the body-portion in the direction of extent of the guide-rail. Rotary movement of the gripper relative to the guide-rail is thereby prevented, while adjacent grippers in a series on the same guide rail are enabled to approach one another such that their body-portions are in abutment. In one embodiment (Fig. 1-3, not shown) a gripper comprising gripping means (15, 16, 17) and body-portion (5) moves along guide rails (1, 2, 3, 4) by means of wheels (8) and (10). One end of tapered stabilising arm (12) is mounted on the part (6) of body-portion (5) which is spaced apart from the guide rails, while its other end engages in a slot between rails (1) and (2) by means of pin (13) and bosses (14). Where the guide means consists of a single rail (Fig. 4, not shown) the end portions (7) of body-portion (6) are provided with wheels (10) which run along the upper and lower parts (19) of rail (18). The end of stabilising arm (12) which is remote from the body-portion (6) is formed as a spherical boss (13) which engages in groove (21) in rail (18). In a further embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown) a single guide rail (18) is formed of top and bottom portions (19) superimposed in a vertical plane, and the stabilising arm (12) of the gripper engages in a cylindrical cavity in a block (22) inset into the space between the top and bottom portions of the rail. The stabilising arm may be made up of a plurality of rods or tubes or of sheet material. A second stabilising arm similar to the first may be provided, the two arms being located on the same side of the body portion and preferably being symmetrically arranged with respect to a horizontal or vertical plane containing the axis of the guide means. The gripping means may comprise a vertically-acting plunger or pivotally-mounted finger resiliently urged against a fixed body-portion, or may comprise two pivotally-mounted fingers urged against each other. The grippers may be used in conjunction with the gripper driving means disclosed in Specifications 1,013,627 and 1,067,871.
