Abstract

1352777 Measuring thickness of layers electrically B ZUMBACH [trading as ZUMBACH ELECTRONIC-AUTOMATIC] 19 April 1971 [11 March 1970] 24082/71 Heading G1N In a contactless measurement of the thickness of a layer on a body e. g. cables, insulated pipes or coatings on sheet material the distance of the measuring head from the layer is controlled by directing a jet of air from a sensing nozzle against the surface of the layer and mechanically controlling the position of the head by a servomotor controlled by the pressure in the sensing nozzle. Cable 2 passes from spraying head 1 between two sensing nozzles 16 around the lower one of which is wound inductive pick up coil 18 of a frequency modulated oscillator. Nozzles 16 are supported on axially movable supports 13 associated with fixtures 11 fixedly mounted on rotatable annular support 9 which is swingably rigidly mounted 4, 5 to frame 3 carrying the spraying head 1. After swinging the nozzles 16 into position as shown astride the cable the jets are moved independently to a predetermined distance from the surface of the cable and maintained there by the servomotor. Thickness of the insulating layer on the cable is determined from the output of the oscillator which varies in accordance with the thickness of the insulating layer. The outer diameter of the cable 2 is measured by means of an inductive differential transducer 24 mounted on the support 13 which measures the distance between the jets 16. After the measurements have been taken the sensing nozzles are disabled and the support 9 rotated by 90 degrees so that the nozzles 16 and coil 18 are horizontal, the measurements being then repeated. Between each set of measurements the device may be zeroed and by rotating the lower nozzle 16 about axis 21 to the position shown in dot-dash calibrated against the layer thickness of standard cable 22. Both nozzles may be mounted on a common carriage rotatable about axis 21. To maintain the measuring head symmetrical with the cable 2 two auxiliary nozzles may be symmetrically arranged with respect to the upper nozzle 16 and connected in a measuring bridge which acts on a servomotor to position the measuring head in the required position. Alternatively two auxiliary measuring coils may be used. In another arrangement Figs. 4 and 5, (not shown) the measuring coil may be wound on a core provided with an elongated air gap and a finely slotted nozzle, the cable being drawn thereacross. With this arrangement the position of the cable in the uniform magnetic field in the air gap is not critical and effects due to sagging of the cable are obviated. A measuring coil may be provided around the upper nozzle in which case the number of measurements required are reduced.
