Abstract

1396073 Measuring cross-sections electrically THYSSEN NIEDERRHEIN AG HUTTEN-UND WALZWERKE 6 June 1973 [13 June 1972] 27027/73 Heading G1N The cross-sectional area of a wire (or rod) is determined by passing the wire through an A.C. energized coil forming part of an LC oscillating circuit and measuring the frequency of the oscillating circuit. At sufficiently high energizing frequencies, 1-30 MHz, the change in inductance of the coil due to eddy currents induced in the wire depends only on the extent to which the coil is filled by the wire and is unaffected by the electrical conductivity and magnetic permeability of the wire. By using short coils having a length to diameter ratio greater than 1.5 the mathematical product of the total capacitance and inductance of the oscillating circuit and hence its frequency is independant of variation of position of the wire in the coil. The coil is in the form of copper strips on a ceramic former provided with inlet and outlet funnels for guiding the wire, the coil and funnels being water cooled.
