1352750 Protecting embankments EAH NAUE KG 4 Aug 1971 [4 Aug 1970 15 Feb 1971] 36713/71 Heading E1H A protective covering for a waterside embankment is formed from assembled rows of preferably pivotably interlocked concrete blocks 83, which are so joined as to leave open spaces 82 between them through which the water can penetrate, and are laid on top of a filter mat comprising a layer of matted non-woven synthetic fibres between layers of porous reinforcing backing, the fibres being bound with a water-resistant binder and being looped through 'both backing layers. Preferably apertures 51 extend through the blocks, or they have recessed edge portions and wedge shaped wall extensions (Figs. 9 and 9a not shown) to provide further water passageways. The blocks which have ribbed undersides 52, may be interlocked by interengaging hooked ends (Fig. 1a not shown), keys and grooves (Fig. 1b not shown) or castellations and recesses (Fig. 1c not shown) or by interengaging frustoconical or frustopyramidal projections and recesses 54, 55. Wires 81, extending from a bottom embankment row of linked base blocks 80, may pass through slots in the embankment blocks 83, the latter being located in their staggered rows by being slid into position along the wires.
