Abstract

1352668 Change-speed gearing FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 22 Sept 1972 43924/72 Heading F2D A manually-operated lay-shaft gear-box having no synchromesh mechanism is provided with a power assist device which is operable to supplement the manual force applied to engage a selected gear only when a sensing device indicates that the gear-box is substantially synchronized for engagement of the selected gear. As shown, the selector rail 12 is connected to the gear lever 11 and to a piston 19 in a cylinder 20 and its position is detected by microswitches 21 which are connected to an electronic logic unit 24. Transducers N 0 , N 1 send signals corresponding to the speeds of the gear-box output and input shafts to the logic unit 24 which produces an output signal when the two portions of the selected dog clutch required to be engaged are rotating substantially in synchronism. The signal from the logic unit actuates a solenoid 34 to open a main control valve 31 between a high pressure oil supply and the cylinder 20, movement of the selector rail 12 from the neutral position having opened, by means of cams 34, 35, one or other of control valves 30, 33, thereby causing movement of the piston 19 to supplement the manual force applied to the selector rails 12 by the driver. In a modification (not shown), the valve 31 is omitted and the valves 30, 33 are replaced by solenoid operated valves controlled by the logic unit.
