Abstract

1352192 Production of polymer particles from solutions thereof SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 14 June 1971 [15 June 1970] 27745/71 Heading BIB Polymer particles are produced from a solution of the polymer in an organic solvent by introducing the solution through inlet 8 into a stream of superheated steam or other hot gas or vapour, at a temperature higher than the maximum boiling point of the solvent, which is flowing through an elongated cylindrical casing 1 provided with an adjustably mounted element with one portion enlarged which forms an annular space 9 with the inner wall of the central zone of the casing, whereby the solution is subjected to high shear. A mixture of steam, vaporized solvent and polymer particles flow out of the lower end of the casing into a suitable separator, e.g. a cyclone separator. If the steam to polymer solution weight ratio is between 1.4 and 2.6, the residual solvent in the product is less than 2%. The shear rate of the feed solution may be changed by sliding adjustment of the element in casing 1. The polymer solution may be a solution of polystyrene, polybutadiene, polyisoprene, or a styrenebutadiene copolymer in a low-boiling hydrocarbon solvent such as mixed pentenes, mixed pentanes, cyclohexane, toluene and mixtures thereof.
