Abstract

1352009 Membrane separation of mercury BP CHEMICALS INTERNATIONAL Ltd 6 June 1972 [10 Aug 1971] 37434/71 Heading B1X Mercury present in an aqueous medium in soluble or colloidal form or as discrete particles of mercury is removed by a process comprising feeding the aqueous medium into contact with one side of membrane of polymeric material and collecting the aqueous permeate, the feed pressure of the aqueous medium being greater than the difference in the osmotic pressure between feed and permeate. Using cellulose acetate membranes, conditions may be: pressure up to 2500 psig, temperature up to 90‹C, mercury concentration in the aqueous medium up to 15% w/w. In the apparatus of Fig. 1 (not shown), feedstock from reservoir (1) pressurised by pump (2) is fed via pressure control valve (11) to cell (3). Non-permeated material is recycled via flow valve (6).
