Abstract

1352002 Making shell cases SUPER CARTRIDGE CO PTY Ltd 27 July 1971 [28 July 1970] 35262/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division F3] A shell case is made by stretching a preform 10 (Fig. 1) radially over a mandrel 2, and stretching it longitudinally by forcing the mandrel and preform into the cavity 5 of a female die 1 (Fig. 3). As described, a linear polythene preform 10 (Fig. 1) is held by fingers adjacent the entry to the die cavity 5, and a tapered mandrel 2 forced into the preform. The holding fingers release the preform, which is moved by the mandrel 2 and a plunger 3 into the cavity 5 until of sufficient length (Fig. 3). After a dwell period, the plunger 3 and shaped shell case 10<SP>1</SP> are retracted from the cavity, and the shell case 10<SP>1</SP> stripped from the mandrel 2 by an apertured plate 4. The plunger 3 is returned to its initial position by compressed air. The end 10<SP>11</SP> of the shell case 10<SP>1</SP> is trimmed away and replaced by a brass cap having a rim.
