Abstract

777,025. Making commutators; deforming rings; corrugating. BOSCH GES., R. Nov. 30, 1955 [Dec. 31, 1954], No. 34227/55. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). Commutator blanks are formed with the segments spaced widely apart and interconnected by thin bridges which are subsequently deformed to bring the segments to the required spacing for moulding on to a hub and are then removed. In one example a blank extruded with cylindrical segments 11, Fig. 3, and interconnecting bridges 12 is deformed in a conical die sleeve 20 by segments 17 which are driven into the sleeve 20. Guides 18 maintain the segments 17 in alignment. The deformed commutator is subsequently provided with anchoring hooks 21, Fig. 6, for moulding over a hub of insulating material and the bridges are removed by machining the outer surface. In another example a disc commutator is formed by embossing a disc with radial segments 31, Fig. 7, spaced by grooves 25 which are subsequently closed up by applying radial forces to produce a ring having narrow grooves 26, Fig. 10, and radial ribs 34 for subsequent removal by machining the face. Anchoring hooks 27, 28, Fig. 11, are formed on the back of the ring for moulding on to a plastic hub 30.
