Abstract

1351961 Reducing the sulphur content of aqueous streams UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO 26 Aug 1971 [31 Aug 1970] 40068/71 Addition to 1329814 Heading C1C A method of reducing the sulphur content of an aqueous stream containing a water-soluble sulphite and/or bisulphite comprises (a) reacting the stream with finely divided sulphur, a polysulphide and/or a water-soluble sulphide compound to form thiosulphate in the stream, (b) reacting the thiosulphate-containing stream with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst to form a sulphide and (c) stripping sulphur in the form of hydrogen sulphide from the sulphidecontaining stream to form an aqueous stream which has a substantially reduced sulphur content and is substantially free of sulphate. The aqueous stream may contain ammonium, alkali metal or alkaline earth metal sulphite or bisulphite. The reducing agent in step (a) may be ammonium, alkali metal or alkaline earth metal polysulphide, sulphide or hydrosulphide or hydrogen sulphide. A wetting agent may be used in step (a). In step (b) the catalyst may comprise a metal of Group VI or VIII (e.g. a sulphide thereof) in combination with alumina, activated carbon or charcoal, silica-zirconia, silica-alumina, bauxite or clay. In step (c) carbon dioxide, steam, nitrogen or air may be used. The hydrogen sulphide released in step (c) may be used in step (a). Steps (a), (b) and (c) may be carried out at elevated temperature and pressure.
