Abstract

1351954 Foam resins BAYER AG 19 Aug 1971 [7 Sept 1970] 38954/71 Heading C3R Flame resistant foam resins which contain urethane, urea and carbodiimide groups and which have a unit weight of 7 to 20 kg/m<SP>3</SP> are prepared by reacting polyhydroxyl compounds with 5 to 600% excess of a polyisocyanate which is a 5 to 90 weight per cent solution of biuret polyisocyanates of the formula wherein R is an M + 1 valent aliphatic, araliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic radical, m is or 2 and n is 0 or an integer of 1 to 4 in monomeric polyisocyanates free from biuret groups or a 5 to 90 weight per cent solution of urethane polyisocyanates of the formula wherein R is as defined above and R<SP>1</SP> is derived from a polyether or polyester polyol in monomeric polyisocyanates free from urethane groups or a 5 to 90 weight per cent solution of a polyisocyanate which has semioarbazide groups in monomeric polyisocyanates free from semicarbazide groups, in the presence of water in amount of 2 to 100 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of polyhydroxyl compound, other blowing agents, catalysts for the isocyanate/active hydrogen reaction and catalysts for the formation of carbodiimide groups. The biuret polyisocyanates are suitably prepared by reacting water with diisocyanates in a molar ratio of at least 1 : 3 and preferably contain 0À1 to 2% by weight of chemically bound emulsifiers. The urethane polyisocyanates are prepared from diisocyanates and polyether or polyester polyols. Suitably the semicarbazide polyisocyanates are derived from monomeric polyisocyanates and 4,4<SP>1</SP> - dihydrazinostilbene - 2,2<SP>1</SP> - disulphonic acid. The catalysts added for the formation of carbodiimide groups are, for example, phospholines, phospholine oxides, phospholine sulphides, phospholidines, phospholidine oxides and phospholidine sulphides.
