Abstract

Polyurethanes are prepared by reacting (a) an alkanolamide containing free hydroxyl groups, that has been obtained by the condensation of (i) a polymerized fatty acid or an ester thereof with (ii) a dialkanolamino in a molar ratio of (i) to (ii) of from 1: 2 to 1: 4, the alkanolamide not being freed by washing from the by-products formed during its preparation and (b) a polyisocyanate. Cellular materials are formed by including a blowing agent and optionally emulsifiers, foam stabilizers and catalysts in the reaction mixture. Conventional polyols, for example, N,N,N<SP>1</SP>,N<SP>1</SP> - tetrakis - (2- hydroxypropyl) - ethylene diamine, polyethers and dimeric fatty acids - bis - monoalkanolamides may also be included in the reaction mixture. In examples the alkanolamides are prepared from commercial dimeric tall oil fatty acid containing varying proportions of monomeric, dimeric, trimeric and higher polymeric fatty acids and diethanolamine. Conventional polyisocyanates, especially aromatic diisocyanates may be reacted with the alkanolamides. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,032,873.
