Abstract

1351813 Moulding resin-fibre elements I E FIGGE 17 May 1971 [20 May 1970] 15292/71 Heading B5A [Also in Divisions D1 and F2] A unitary resin-fibre structural element comprises alternate layers of mutually crossing filaments 6 disposed one above the other and defining a series of tetrahedrons 9 arranged in longitudinal rows, those in one row pointing upwards and those in adjacent rows pointing downwards and being in an offset sequential relation to adjacent rows. The fibres are laid in a series of parallel longitudinal planes and in two series of parallel planes that traverse the structure at opposite angles to the longitudinal axis. As shown all three planes are inclined to the minor axis (the vertical axis). The embodiment of Fig. 2 is prepared by winding one continuous filament back and forth across jig 1, impregnating the winding with epoxy resin, curing the resin, cutting any overhanging filament and removing the product from the jig. In the production of a cylindrical structure the jig comprises a cylindrical mandrel 10 upon which is helically wrapped a sheet 11 of fibreglass having upstanding knobs 12 of tetrahedral shape, the sheet being held in place by pins 5a driven into the mandrel in a helical path. Epoxy resin is applied and cured, the pins removed, any overhanging filament cut, the sheet 11 and the product removed from the mandrel 10 and the sheet removed from inside the product which may be used as a shaft. In a third embodiment the jig has the shape of an aerofoil.
