1351747 Measuring moisture content electrically RANK ORGANISATION Ltd 13 July 1971 [14 July 1970] 34148/70 Heading G1N The moisture content of sheet material is determined by positioning the sheet in a substantially spiral waveguide and measuring the amount of attenuation of a microwave passing along the waveguide. The waveguide is formed by two plates each, Fig. 1, being provided with registering helical grooves 5, incorporating short straight sections, which are spaced facing each other so that the grooves form a helical channel, access being via passages 9, 10. In operation the sheet is placed between the plates and microwave energy passed down the channel, the attenuation, due to the spiral channel, being constant for a given moisture content irrespective of the direction of orientation of the fibres of the sheet. A thermistor 12 mounted in the channel provides a temperature compensating signal to the measuring apparatus. A wave attenuating element 11 may be located in one of the grooves to suppress reflections from the ends of the passage. The two plates may be hinged. Each plate may be metallic or non-metallic with the surface of the grooves metallized.
