Abstract
1327452 Measuring moisture content electrically RANK ORGANISATION Ltd 7 July 1971 [8 July 1970] 33114/70 Heading G1N The moisture content of a fluent paste sample 8 is measured by positioning the sample 8 between opposed buds 14, 16 of waveguide sections 10, 12 or a split waveguide provided with barrier seals 6 to prevent the sample from entering the waveguides 10, 12 when they are moved towards each other to squeeze the sample 8 to an even thickness. The attenuation of a micro-wave passing down the waveguide by the sample is measured to determine the moisture content of the sample. The ends 14, 16 lie at an angle 4 to the axis of the waveguide to minimise reflections from the sample surface and the seals 6, transparent to the micro-wave, are of a thickness to assist in the minimization of the reflections. Circular plates 2, 2a are fixed at the ends of the sections 10, 12 and may include dielectric filled recesses 3 to prevent radial propagation of the micro-wave. A thermistor may be employed to provide a temperature compensation signal.
