Abstract

1351596 Applying filter aids STELLAMETA FILTERS Ltd and PERMUTIT CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [6 March 1970 10 March 1970 19 March 1970] 10968/70 11458/70 and 13362/70 Heading B1D Various types of filter element are precoated with two or three successive layers of filter aids, the first comprising beads or granular powder of polystyrene, nylon, phenol formaldehyde or carbon, the second comprising asbestos or cellulose fibres and the third, when used, comprising a powdered filter aid. The first layer prevents the fibres of the second layer from sticking to the filter elements, and the first and second layers prevent powdered filter aid from being entrained in the filtrate. The layers are applied by mixing successive aids with liquid and filtering through the elements, and periodically they are removed by packwashing and renewed. Beer or boiler water may be filtered. Grain sizes and layer thicknesses are exemplified. Hydrophobic filter aids may be surface treated to render them more compatible with water to be filtered.
