Abstract

1351340 Electric motor cooling and bearing arrangements UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 1 Aug 1972 [11 Aug 1971] 37798/71 Heading H2A [Also in Division F2] An electric motor having a rotor 1 mounted on a tubular shaft 4 and a stator 2 in a cylindrical casing 3 has a hydrodynamic gas bearing assembly comprising a bearing member 7 in which is located the shaft 4, the bearing member being mounted in a secondary bearing assembly 10 which includes speed responsive retarding means for limiting the speed of rotation of the bearing member. The bearing member may have a lining 8 of plastics material and may be resiliently mounted within the inner race 13 of a self aligning ball bearing which constitutes the secondary bearing assembly. Fan blades 17 are provided on the inner race to constitute the retarding means. On starting of rotation of the journal, the bearing member rotates with the journal until a speed is reached at which the starting friction between journal and bearing member is overcome and a hydrodynamic gas film is sustained. Air pressure on the blades of the fan offer resistance to the rotation of the bearing member. A flange 20 may be provided on the bearing member which co-operates with a flange on the shaft to form a thrust bearing.
