Abstract

1,000,355. Bearings. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY, LONDON. Dec. 17, 1962 [Dec. 21, 1961], No. 45959/61. Heading F2A. A fluid bearing has thermal control means for so controlling the temperature of one of the members relative to the temperatures of the other member that an acceptable clearance is maintained between them. The control means may be heat-insulating material 9 which extends over the external surface of a sleeve 2. The material 9 is of laminated form comprising layers 10 of expanded metal and foil, or dimpled metal and foil; and is retained by covers 11, 12 which are secured to a flange 3 and to a ring 4 of a diaphragm 5 respectively. The latter has an outer ring 6 which is secured by bolts to a flange 7 of a housing 8. In an embodiment, a compressor (not shown) has a fluid bearing as above described, supporting a shaft, which has an electric rotor and an impeller mounted thereon and a plain thrust bearing at one end thereof.
