Abstract

1351057 Synthetic bristles E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 28 Jan 1972 [16 Feb 1971] 4200/72 Heading A4K [Also in Division B5] The cross-section of a tapered paint brush bristle is as shown in the drawing, R 2 being greater than R 1 and the ratio of 2R 2 to D being at least 1: 1. The bristle is made by extrusion of a plastics material filament preferably a polyamide polyester or polyolefin, e. g. polyhexamethylene dodecanediamide or poly (butylene -1, 4 - terephthalate), drawing the filament at least 3 preferably 3À5 to 5À5 times such that the drawn filament has a diameter which varies regularly with points of minimum diameter separated by a distance which is at least twice the length of the finished bristles, heat setting the drawn filament by exposure to a gas such as air at 150‹ to 200‹C for 30 to 90 seconds or by exposure to a liquid at 140‹ to 200‹ C for 2 to 10 seconds and then cutting the filaments at the points of minimum diameter. The bristles are preferably gathered into bundles tipped and flagged or micro-flagged, Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1291986.
