Abstract

1,077,590. Brushes. OSBORN MANUFACTURING CO. Sept. 29, 1964 [Nov. 4, 1963], No. 39658/64. Heading A4K. A metal, glass, plastic or fibrous brush bristle has a helically extending plastic rib or ribs. The bristle core may be a single straight wire or monofilament or a bundle of straight or twisted fibres. The rib may be of circular, rectangular or triangular cross-section and have a diameter smaller than, equal to or greater than the core. The rib may be made from a material including abrasive granules or a wax or oil lubricant and it may be secured to the core by an adhesive, by heat sealing or high-frequency welding. As shown, a wire 3 is coated with adhesive on passing through bath 15 and has a nylon filiament wound round it as carriage 8 is rotated by electric motor 11. The adhesive is cured as the wire passes through oven 23 to be re-wound on reel 6. In an alternative method (Figs. 9 and 10, not shown) an epoxy rib is extruded on to the wire as this passes through a rotating die. Hard steel bristles with helical ribs of foamed polyurethane are referred to. When formed into a rotary brush, the ribbed filaments may be embedded in known manner in a foamed elastomeric mass.
