Abstract

1350550 Depositing cake filling ITT INDUSTRIES INC 22 Aug 1972 [31 Aug 1971] 39085/72 Heading A2A [Also in Division B8] Apparatus for depositing measured amounts of a material such as a crumb mix for cakes comprises a rotatable drum 21, Fig. 3, with a Y-shaped boring 22 to receive material from an entrance port 20a when the drum is in one position and to discharge the material through an exit port 20b when the drum is in another position. The apparatus described comprises an elongated drum with a plurality of borings 22 for depositing a mix, e.g. comprising shortening, sugar, flour, and small amounts of almond paste, honey, cinnamon and salt for cup cakes, into cups in pans 12, Fig. 5, carried by a moving conveyer belt 13, each pan having three rows of cups 12a, 12b, 12c and the drum having one boring 22 for each cup in a row. A pan arriving beneath the apparatus operates a switch 30 to cause clutches 32, 33 to be engaged so that shafts 21a, 16b are driven by motors 34, 35. The shaft 21a drives the drum 21, and the shaft 16b drives a bladed rotor (not shown) in a hopper 14 to force material through a perforated screen 16c so that it falls into a hopper 17 whence it passes through ducts 20a into the borings 22 of the drum. The hopper 14 has rotary agitators (not shown) on shafts 14c, 14d driven by the motor 35. Flow of material from the hopper 17 into the borings 22 is assisted by timed air blasts through tubes 29a controlled by a valve actuated by a cam 28 on the shaft 21a, and discharge of material from the borings 22 is effected by timed air blasts through tubes 26, 27 controlled by a valve actuated by a cam 24 on the shaft 21a. The tubes 26, 27 communicate with the borings 22 when the drum is in a position for discharge.
