Abstract
1350152 Edge filter BENDIX CORP 19 April 1971 [1 April 1970] 25765/71 Headings B1D and BIT A filter apparatus 10 for removing particles of diameters 0.01 to 10 microns from a fluid, e.g. air, comprises a stack of washers 26 mounted on a threaded rod 44. The stack is mounted within a two part casing 12, 14 with fluid inlet 20 leading to an annular inlet space 22 around the outside of the washer stack and filtered-fluid outlet 42 leading to an annular outlet space 32 between the inner surfaces of the washers and rod 44. Fluid passes from the inlet to the outlet along passages formed as grooves in the surface of each washer, one end of which 140, 142 (Fig. 3) communicates with the inlet space 22 whilst the other end 194 communicates with outlet space 32. A number of pockets 168 are formed along each passage and these are arranged to trap the solid particles by centrifugal deposition. The pockets 168 may have a combined inlet and outlet 146 as shown in Fig. 3 (also Fig. 4, not shown) which is offset to one side of the pocket so that incoming fluid will swirl in the pocket and generate the centrifugal forces. Alternatively, the pockets may have separate inlets and outlets mounted at adjacent corners of the pocket (Figs. 6 and 7, not shown), in which case the inlet and outlet are connected outside the pocket to allow some of the fluid flow to by-pass the pocket. In a third embodiment (Fig. 8, not shown), there is a single fluid inlet and outlet in the centre of one side of the pocket, but the fluid is directed into and out of the pocket at an angle. The sections of the passageway between pockets, suitably, are straight for a sufficient length to enable laminar fluid flow to be established between the pockets. The use of the filter apparatus to treat gases at high temperatures, e.g. 1000‹C, to remove organic particles is mentioned. In such a case, the washers become so hot that the removed solids are burnt off and the filter is self cleaning.
