Abstract

1349901 Wave - energy direction - finding LITTON SYSTEMS Inc 18 March 1971 7225/71 Heading H4D In a digital wave-energy direction-finder, particularly for radio waves, the sum and difference of the outputs of two aerials 10, 11 (or equivalent sound wave or light wave transducers) are formed in lines 35, 36, the output of one aerial, e.g. 10, is phase advanced and retarded by equal amounts and the sum taken as shown with the output of the other aerial, and comparators 43, 44 give respective binary one or zero depending on whether the signal on line 35 is greater or less than that on line 36 and similarly for lines 37, 38. More spaced pairs of aerials may be added to increase bearing resolution, Figs. 8 to 12 (none shown); or one aerial pair with frequency multiplication may be utilized to afford an equivalent result, Fig. 15 (not shown). Compensation for differing wave frequencies is described, Figs. 17, 18 (none shown). An elevation-determining system may be added. Modular construction may be employed for portable use.
