Abstract

871,383. Radio direction-finding. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. July 24, 1959 [Aug. 1, 1958], No. 24964/58. Class 40(7) [Also in Group XL(b) ] A direction-finding system includes a unitary waveguide structure comprising four rectangular waveguides coupled through common walls by four couplers in such a way that outputs are obtainable from two of the guides the amplitudes of which constitute a measure of the position of a source of radiation in two orthogonal planes. The waveguides 1, 2, 3, 4, Fig. 1, are connected to four radio aerials comprising open-ended guides arranged at the four corners of a square. The waves passed to the waveguides 1, 2 and 4 are shifted in phase by 180, 90 and 90 degrees respectively by phase-shifting devices 5, 6 and 7. The waveguides are inter connected in the manner shown by four couplers 8, 9, 10, 11 of the type which effect an equal division of energy between the coupled guides. The amplitudes of the waves at points 12, 13, 14, 15 are proportional to (B+C)-(A+D), A+B+C+D, (C+D)- (A+B) and (B+D)-(A+C) where the letters denote the input amplitudes. If the aerials connected to guides 1, 2 are directly above those connected to guides 4, 3 respectively, the amplitudes at 12 and 14 will give azimuth and elevation measures of the position of the source. These signals and the signal at point 13, which represents the sum A+B+C+D are heterodyned with waves from a local oscillator, supplied over guide 18, in mixers 16, 17, 27 respectively comprising couplers 21, 25, 26. Where the apparatus forms the direction-finding system of a missile guided by reflections from the target, an additional aerial for receiving signals from a ground transmitter is connected to a guide 75. These signals are heterodyned with the local oscillator frequency in a mixer 74. Specifications 871,381, 871,382 and 871,384 are referred to.
