Abstract
1349564 Blood filter R L SWANK 31 March 1971 8316/71 Heading B1D [Also in Divisions A5-A6] A blood filter comprises a housing consisting of a tube 134 clamped between end discs 130, 132 and enclosing a mass of filter medium 144 held between perforate plates 156, 160, the cavity 144b downstream of the medium having a blood outlet 142 and an air outlet 168, which in use is fitted with a bleed valve (170). Fig. 3 (not shown) illustrates how the filter 126 may be located in various parts of a circuit used to pump and oxygenate a patient's blood during heart surgery. Perforate plates 156, 160 are supported by peripheral shoulders extending inwards from the end discs. Plate 156 has an imperforate central area opposite inlet nipple 138 to shield medium 144 from direct flow. A nylon or stainless steel screen 158 prevents the filter medium from being entrained. The medium may be a fibrous mass of various plastics, glass, steel, cotton or shredded paper of specified fibre length and dia, and may include a relatively dense downstream portion. Tube 134 is glass or plastics, end discs 130, 132 are plastics or stainless steel.
