Abstract

1333896 Respiratory appliances; collecting sputum CHAMPION SPARK PLUG CO 22 Feb 1972 [22 Feb 1971] 8190/72 Headings A5R and A5T [Also in Division B1] Sputum samples are collected from a patient without contaminating the environment by arranging cowl 13 over the patient's face and administering a cough-inducing aerosol through hose 18 while drawing air through the cowl and housing 12 by means of blower 30 disposed between an efficient filter 44 and the outlet 29. The filter 44, which is capable of removing all particles larger than 1 micron from the air, is usually pleated and comprises cellulose-asbestos-fibre paper, glass and glassasbestos fibre papers, ceramic fibre paper, compressed glass fibres, or composite beds of glass wool pads. In order to reduce loading of filter 44, a gross particle filter 45 (e.g. a thin mat of rayon fibre) and a pre-filter 46 (a glass fibre screen) may be placed upstream of filter 44. All three filters are disposable; and filter 45 should be replaced after each use of the device. A portion of the filtered air leaving the device is diverted through valve 47 and hose 16 to an ultrasonic nebulizer (not shown) which is connected to the aerosol supply hose 18. The cowl 13, which is preferably made of transparent synthetic resinous material, is supported on wire frame 37 which fits tightly into the inlet end of the housing 12.
