Abstract

1349357 Propylamines TEIKOKU HORMONE MFG CO Ltd 27 Nov 1970 [28 Nov 1969 31 March 1970 (2) 21 July 1970 16 Oct 1970 13 Nov 1970] 56501/70 Heading C2C Propylamines of the general Formula I Ar-OCH 2 CH(OZ)CH 2 NHR wherein Ar represents a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group, Z represents a hydrogen atom or an aliphatic or araliphatic group and R represents an alkyl or aralkyl group or acid addition salts thereof, are prepared by reacting azetidines of the general formula with phenols of the formula ArOH and, if desired or necessary, removing the aliphatic or araliphatic group to form propylamines in which Z represents hydrogen. Ar represents a wide range of aryl groups and when Ar represents a naphthyl group, R has the above significance and Z represents a hydrogen atom or a substituted or unsubstituted benzyl group, the product of the above process may be hydrogenated under substantially atmospheric pressure in the presence of a solvent to form a propylamine where Ar represents a 5,6,7,8,-tetrahydronaphthyl group and Z represents hydrogen or a substituted or unsubstituted benzyl group. The propylamines of Formula I and acid addition salts thereof are novel when Z is other than hydrogen and the following propanolamines of Formula I are novel: 1-(4<SP>1</SP>-aminophenoxy)-, 1-(2<SP>1</SP>,3<SP>1</SP>-dimethyl- 4<SP>1</SP>-methoxyphenoxy) - and 1-(4-hydroxyphenoxy)-3-(t-butylamino)-propan-2-ols and acid addition salts thereof. Pharmaceutical compositions comprise a novel propylamine in association with a carrier. When Z is a benzyl or substituted benzyl group the active ingredients are antiulcerative agents, and the second propanolamine above possesses #- adrenergic blocking and stimulating activity.
