Abstract

1349260 Cryogenic containers HITACHI SHIPBUILDING & ENG CO Ltd 21 May 1971 [22 May 1970 (2)] 16314/71 Heading F4P [Also in Division F2] A cryogenic container comprises a plurality of cylinder assemblies 9a, 9b, 9c, 9d located between the tank bottom 3 and the floor 5 of a supporting structure such as a ship. Each assembly 9a comprises two cylinders 14, 15 arranged on either side of a chock 20 supported by the tank bottom 3. Cylinders 14, 15 are mounted on the hold floor 5. Pistons 12, 13 are reciprocable in cylinder 14, 15 and their free ends engage opposite sides of chock 20. The outer chambers 21a, 22a of cylinders 14, 15 are interconnected by a line 25 having a throttle valve and the inner chambers 21b, 22b by a line 26 with a throttle valve 24. If expansion of the tank takes place and chock 20 moves away from the vertical tank axis O, chamber 21a is pressurized and fluid will pass to chamber 22a which thus moves piston 13 to follow chock 20. During a contraction of the tank, chamber 22a is initially pressurized and a similar process ensues. Thus expansion and contraction of the container can take place since they occur so slowly that the throttled passages 25, 26 can accommodate the movement of oil between the chambers that is required. However, if a rapid movement of the supporting structure occurs, such as the pitching and rolling of a ship, then the throttled passages reduce movement of the tank to a negligible amount. Further modifications, in which expansion and contraction can take place but in which no bulk movement whatsoever of the tank can take place are illustrated in Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown). Rotation of the tank can also be prevented (Figs. 8, 9, and 10, not shown).
