Abstract
1349249 Fibrillating films ERNEST SCRAGG & SONS Ltd 29 Nov 1971 [1 Dec 1970] 56960/70 Headings B5B and B5A Textile filaments are prepared by fibrillating films which have been treated by a process in which the film is profiled by means of a roller whose surface is formed with alternating circumferential grooves and ribs. The film is fed to the profiling roller at a temperature below that at which all the crystals of the polymer material have melted and lost their crystalline form, but the profiling element is maintained at a temperature high enough to bring the film in contact with it to a temperature above this temperature. The profiling element preferably comprises the grooved roller with a plain backing roller forcing the film against the grooved roller. The grooves are formed without radiused corners and may be square as in Fig. 1 or slightly undercut, as in Fig. 2. The film is preferably polypropylene.
