Abstract

1,260,838. Film fibrillation apparatus. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 26 March, 1969 [10 April, 1968], No. 34172/71. Divided out of 1,260,836. Heading B5B. Apparatus suitable for the film fibrillation process of the parent Specification comprises a profiling unit A and means B for stretching uniaxially in the longitudinal direction a profiled film from said profiling unit and for subjecting the stretched film to a fibrillation treatment during and/or after the stretching treatment, said profiling unit comprising an element 3 having a non-yielding surface provided with a plurality of closely-spaced, parallel surface ridges each having a profile (illustrated to an enlarged scale in Fig. 2), in a plane normal to the longitudinal direction of the ridge, which includes inwardly directed sides leading to a peak and a further element 4 having a non-yielding surface, said further element forming a nip with said profiling element through which nip a film web or sheet-like mass of synthetic organic thermoplastic polymer can be passed. Preferably the apparatus includes a slot-die extruder 1 for producing a sheet-like mass of polymer, which may consist of a laminate of at least two polymers in superimposed relationship. The profiling unit A (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) suitably comprises a pair of co-operating rotatable rollers 3, 4 having non-yielding surfaces, at least one of the rollers being adapted to be driven and at least one having a plurality of said surface ridges, and means, preferably pneumatic or hydraulic, for biasing said rollers towards one another to form a nip. In the preferred embodiment the stretching means includes a series of Godet rollers 6 and 8 separated by a heating oven 7 and the stretched film, which is already partially fibrillated by the stretching treatment, is completely fibrillated by treatment in means 9 which includes an elongated passage through which the stretched film is passed together with a current of air which is arranged to travel at a high velocity in the direction of the film. The profile of the ridges of the ridged roller 3 (or rollers 3 and 4) is preferably that of the Britsh Standard Whitworth screw thread and is such that the pitch of the ridges is within the range 0À003 to 0À05 inch and the depth of the troughs between adjacent ridges is within the range 0À002 to 0À02 inch.
