Abstract
1348951 Printing with resin ink BAYER AG 3 Feb 1972 [4 Feb 1971] 5115/72 Heading B6C [Also in Division C3] A substrate is printed by a flexographic, intaglio or screen process by applying to it a printing ink comprising a resin or resin mixture that cures in the presence of an acid, a solvent or solvent mixture, and an initiator that releases acid on exposure to U.V. light, and irradiating the applied ink with U.V. light to release acid and cure the resin. Preferably the ink comprises 3-50 wt. per cent resin, 0-30 wt. per cent physically drying resin, 30-90 wt. per cent solvent, 0-30 wt. per cent colourant and 0À5- 10 wt. per cent initiator. Suitable initiators are the organic halo compounds disclosed in Netherlands Specification 65 12894, alkyl alpha halo ketones, as in Specification 1,299,144, halomethylated benzophenones, as in Specification 1,304,729, and alpha methylol benzoin sulphonic acid esters, as in Specification 1,265,604. In the example an ink is prepared from 10 p.b.w. red azo pigment, 5À6 p.b.w. soya alkyd resin and 5À4 p.b.w. urea formaldehyde resin, in butanol, 4 p.b.w. nitrocellulose, 2 p.b.w. p-benzoylbenzal chloride and an ethanol, ethyl acetate-, and ethoxyethyl acetate solvent mixture. It is applied by a flexographic machine to paper, polyethylene film or A1 foil, which is then led past an IR heat source and Hg lamps as U.V. source.
