Abstract

1348672 Aerials; radar BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP Ltd 14 July 1972 [26 July 1971] 34990/71 Headings H4A and H4D A spherical microwave lens is associated with a part-spherical reflector and means whereby said reflector is movable in use towards and away from said lens. In one embodiment, a spherical microwave lens 12, Fig. 2, of dielectric material is mounted within a nose cone 10 of a target aircraft. The focal point F of the lens is upon its rear surface, which is provided with a resistive coating 11 of colloidal graphite, or of carbon loaded cloth or rubber sheet. A reflector 13 in the nose cone 10 is of part-spherical form, and has an inside curvature approximately equal to the outside curvature of the lens 12. It is mounted on the end of a movable ram extending from an electric actuator, which may be controlled by signals from a programmer so that the reflector is either in contact with the lens or is up a quarter-wavelength (at the mean operating frequency) away from it. The amplitude of the reflected wave energy is greatest when the reflector is in contact with the lens, and is reduced as it is moved away. In another embodiment, Fig. 1 (not shown), the resistive coating on the back of the lens is omitted, and the focal point is arranged to be a half-wavelength (at the mean operating frequency) behind the rear surface. The reflector is movable about the focal point, whereby a variation in the phase of the reflected wave energy is produced. In this embodiment, the target aircraft is also provided with a spherical lens having a fixed part-spherical reflector. The arrangements may be used in radar testing, for example, to simulate glint.
