Abstract

1348558 m-Bis-anilide derivatives STAUFFER CHEMICAL CO 19 April 1971 [16 March 1970] 22032/71 Addition to 1241702 Heading C2C m-Bis-anilide derivatives of the general formula in which R 1 and R 2 are independently selected from hydrogen, alkyl, alkoxyalkyl, cycloalkyl, pinonoyl, ethylcycloalkyl, lower alkenyl, halogenated lower alkyl, benzyl, furyl, ethylphenyl, styryl, 2,4-dichlorophenoxymethylene, phenyl and substituted-phenyl in which said substituents are nitro halogen, methyl or methoxy; R 3 and R 4 are independently selected from hydrogen and lower alkyl; X and Y are independently oxygen or sulphur; and Z is selected from halogen, nitro, amino, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, and trifluoromethyl and n is an integer having a value from 0 to 4, with the proviso that if neither R 1 nor R 2 is a binonoyl, ethyl cycloalkyl or 2,4-dichloro phenoxymethylene group then X and Y must both be oxygen, R 3 and R 4 both hydrogen, n be 0 and R 1 and R 2 be the same alkyl group which may not be methyl are prepared by condensing (a) the appropriate mphenylene diamine and the appropriate acid anhydride or chloride, or (b) the appropriate m-mono-substituted amino anilide with the appropriate acid anhydride or chloride. Many examples are given. The compounds have herbicidal properties and are used to form herbicidal compositions.
