Abstract

1348535 Loud-speaker cabinets RANK ORGANISATION Ltd 29 March 1972 [7 April 1971] 8949/71 Headings H4J and H4X A loud-speaker cabinet has at least one panel constituted by at least two spaced skins with a liquid filling the space between the skins. The liquid may be water or a mixture of liquids and may contain at least one solid substance in suspension or solution or colloidal form. It may contain solids or liquids to prevent freezing or to reduce evaporation or inhibit corrosion, or it may contain solids or liquids intended to change the viscosity or add a degree of thixotropy, or to polymerize on exposure to atmosphere so that the panel becomes self-sealing. The walls of the cabinet may be rigid plates with a flexible liquid-filled bag panel attached to the inner surface of at least one plate. In one embodiment (Fig. 2) the space between the skins of a panel 3 is filled with liquid and the sound reproducing unit 2 incorporates a cooling jacket, connected by pipes 6 to the panel 3, for cooling the voice coil and/or magnet system. The skins may be flexible or rigid, or one skin may be flexible whilst the other is rigid. The panel may be fitted with a filling plug and a discharge opening for easy filling and emptying. The panel may have at least one partition between the skins (Fig. 4, not shown) so that there are at least two spaces filled with liquid between the skins. The skins may be interconnected at one part within the panel to increase its rigidity. The cabinet may incorporate several such liquid-filled panels. The cabinet may consist of a skeleton frame (7) supporting liquid-filled bags (8) constituting cabinet walls (Fig. 3, not shown). The bags (8) may be formed with perforated tabs (9) engaging hooks (10) on the frame (7).
