Abstract

1348494 Protective arrangements; supply systems for consuming apparatus WESTING- HOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO Ltd 20 Oct 1971 [18 Nov 1970] 54780/70 Headings H2K and H2H A polyphase static switching arrangement comprises a plurality of switching means 4 ... 9 connected between input terminals 1 ... 3 and output terminals for a load 10, an impedance network 18 ... 20 connected across the output terminals, and fault detecting means 21 connected between a point in that network and a reference point 25, the points normally having the same potential. In the three phase arrangement shown, the switching means comprise inverse-parallel semi-conductor controlled rectifiers with firing circuits 11 ... 16, and the reference point 25 is a neutral point provided by a further impedance network 22 ... 24. To switch on, a start switch 26 is momentarily closed to cause the firing circuit 11 to render only the rectifier 4 conducting. The resulting simulated fault causes the relay 21 to close the contacts shown to energize a relay 29. The relay 29 closes its contacts in series with a normally closed stop switch 27 to complete a holding circuit for itself and to energize the firing circuits 12 ... 16. Providing no fault exists the relay 21 releases and the firing circuit 11 is maintained energized through an isolating diode 30. The relay 21 has contacts (not shown) in an indicating or alarm circuit. An override switch 28 enables the arrangement to be used in the event of a defective relay 21. In an alternative arrange - ment the switching means 4, 6 and 8 are diodes, only the switching means 5, 7 and 9 being controlled rectifiers.
