Abstract

1347966 Graft polymers of vinyl chloride and ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer B P CHEMICALS Ltd 19 April 1971 [5 Feb 1970] 5575/70 Heading C3G A film forming graft copolymer latex is made by polymerizing vinyl chloride as the sole additional monomer in the presence of a vinyl acetate/ethylene copolymer having a polymerized ethylene content of 5-45% by wt. as the sole copolymer (i.e. prepared by copolymerization of two or more monomers) under emulsion polymerization conditions with a water soluble polymerization initiator, the amount of vinyl chloride polymerized being such that the latex will form coherent films at 30‹ C. or below. The copolymer latices may contain unpolymerized vinyl acetate. The vinyl chloride may be added as a single charge or continuously during the polymerization. In the examples the polymerization mixture contained, besides the monomer and copolymer, a nonyl phenol/ethylene oxide condensate, sodium dodecyl benzene sulphonate, polyvinyl alcohol, water, ammonium persulphate and sodium metabisulphate.
