Abstract

1385326 Vinyl halide copolymers BP CHEMICALS INTERNATIONAL Ltd 29 Sept 1972 [20 Sept 1971] 43689/71 Heading C3P Vinyl halide copolymers are obtained by polymerizing in a first stage a monomeric material containing at least 50% wt. of vinyl halide in the presence of a free radical initiator until at least 40% of the monomer is polymerized and in a second stage adding a comonomer, which forms a copolymer having a lower softening point than the polymer obtained in its absence, in an amount less than the weight of the remaining monomer from the first stage and completing polymerization in the presence of additional free radical initiator. The first stage monomer is preferably vinyl chloride and the second stage comonomer is methyl methacrylate (exemplified), ethyl, butyl or 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, vinyl acetate or stearate, vinylidene chloride, ethylene or propylene. Suspension polymerization is preferred. The temperature may be raised in the second stage.
