1347837 Glass ceramics CARL-ZEISSSTIFTUNG [trading as JENAER GLASWERK SCHOTT & GEN] 22 June 1972 [1 July 1971] 29248/72 Heading C1M A transparent glass ceramic produced from a glass, which has been melted and shaped and thereafter subjected to a heat treatment for the controlled crystallization of innumerable, irregularly oriented, minute crystals of the structural type of #-quartz, wherein the glass ceramic has the following composition calculated as oxides on a percentage by weight basis: SiO 2 40-70, Al 2 O 3 15-30, P 2 O 5 0-10, Li 2 O 2-6, MgO 0-5, ZnO 0-8, ZrO 2 2-10, Ta 2 O 5 1-10, BaO and/or CaO 0-2, rare earth oxide(s) and/or yttrium oxide 0-12, refining agent(s) 0-5, Na 2 O and/or K 2 O 0-5; the contents of Li 2 O MgO, ZnO and P 2 O 5 being such that the Al 2 O 3 content, to within Œ4% by weight of the composition, is sufficient for forming the compounds LiAlO 2 , MgAl 2 O 4 , ZnAl 2 O 4 and AlPO 4 . The glass ceramic has a thermal longitudinal expansion of less than 15 Î 10<SP>-7</SP>/‹ C. in the temperature range 20-300‹ C. A suitable heat treatment would comprise heating the article up at about 10‹ C./hour to a temperature of 820-860‹ C., left at this temperature for 2 to 6 hours and then cooled at approximately 100‹ C./hour. More rapid heating procedures are also possible in which case a residence time of 2 to 4 hours at 680-750‹ C. is desirable.
