Abstract
A semi-crystalline glass consists essentially, in per cent by weight, of: SiO2, 52-70; B2O3, 1-6; Al2O3, 15-30; MgO, 2-7; Li2O, 2.75-6.25; and crystallization promoters, being: ZrO2, 2-4; SnO2, 0.5-3. The composition consists of fine crystals of the Li2O/Al2O3/SiO2 system formed in a glassy matrix. The batch is melted at 2700-2950 DEG F., and the glass is worked or formed at 2000-2600 DEG F. The articles are then cooled to below the nucleating temperature, and are then reheated to 1600-1800 DEG F. until sufficient crystallization occurs. The reheating may follow immediately upon the cooling, or after an interval, e.g. for annealing and decorating. The articles are usually translucent and may be white, or coloured by impurities. The non-crystallized glass and the semi-crystalline glass may have coefficients of expansion of 13.7 x 10-7 and 30 x 10-7/ DEG C. respectively. The crystals formed are probably b -spodumene, Li2O.Al2O3.4SiO2.
