Abstract
1347822 Cupping STANDON Inc 5 June 1972 [14 June 1971] 26101/72 Heading B3Q Apparatus for forming cup-shaped articles comprises a hollow cylindrical blankholder 36, Fig. 10, reciprocable towards and away from a redraw die ring 42, a reciprocable ram 24 mounted for axial movement through the blankholder to engage and carry a cup-shaped blank 30 through the die ring, a rotable cam 56, Fig. 6, having a cam follower 66 which is resiliently biased against the cam surface 64, a blankholder mounting frame 54, and a blankholder actuating means 84, 86 connecting the mounting frame 54 to the cam follower 66. With the ram 24 and blankholder 36 in their retracted positions as shown in Fig. 10, a blank 30 is fed to a yoke 40. The blankholder is then moved into the open end of the blank to engage the bottom wall thereof by means of the camming action of two rotating cams 56 via the resilently biased followers 66, pivoted arms 78 and actuating rods 84, 86. The blank is thus held against the die ring 42, the pressure of retention being determined by air pressure in chamber 116, Fig. 10, of cylinder 106. The ram 24 is then moved forwardly to engage the bottom of the blank so as to push the blank through the die ring 42. As the blank passes through the die ring, the blankholder 36 is forced forwardly by the pressure in chamber 116 to the forward limit of the cylinder 106 as determined by limiting screws 126. Continued movement of the ram 24 carries the blank through wall ironing die rings 44, Fig. 4, a stripper 46 and against a bottom doming die 48. The movement of the ram is then reversed carrying the finished can body 32 rearwardly into engagement with the stripper 46. Continued rearward movement of the ram strips the can from the ram.
