Abstract

1347783 Locking nuts and bolts REFAC TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT CORP 25 June 1971 29964/71 Heading F2H A locking or sealing nut or bolt includes a rigid body 1 with a screw thread 15, having a radial seating face 2 in which is a depression 5 coaxial with the screw thread and bounded by a radial wall 8 and a cylindrical wall 7, and a resilient ring 6, e.g. of nylon, having a first portion 9 received in the depression 5 and bonded to at least one of the walls 7, 8, and a second portion 10 having an outwardly projecting frusto-conical outer face coaxial with the screw thread. Recesses 14 spaced round the depression 5 and together extending over about 90 degrees of arc have a combined volume at least as great as the volume of the ring portion 10 projecting beyond the seating face 2. When the nut shown is screwed on to a bolt 18 extending through a clearance bore 19 in a workpiece 20, the bore having a bevelled rim 21, the ring 6 is deformed so that part of the material flows into the recesses 14, the nut being tightened until the face 2 seats against the workpiece 20. The ring 6 is bonded to the nut body 1 by placing it in the recess 5 and heating the body 1 by induction to cause fusion of the contacting surfaces of the ring to the walls 7, 8 of the recess. These walls may be serrated, knurled, or corrugated to improve the bond. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,184,269.
