Abstract

1347658 Seaming non-metallic sheet material JOSEPH LUCAS (AUSTRALIA) PTY Ltd 25 July 1972 [16 Aug 1971] 34797/72 Heading B5K [Also in Division H1] A thermoplastic member 21 or 31 is joined to a thermoplastic battery case wall by placing the member 21 or 31 against the wall, bringing an ultrasonically vibrating tool 6 into contact with the member 21 or 31 to render fusible at least one welding zone 27 on the member 21 or 31, forcing the tool 6 to penetrate the member 21 or 31 to a depth sufficient to render fusible a welding zone in the wall and to provide a hole through the member 21 or 31 and a recess in the wall and allowing the thermoplastic material of the respective zones to fuse together to weld the member 21 or 31 to the wall. Preferably, the thermoplastic material is polypropylene or a copolymer of ethylene and propylene. The thermoplastic member may be a foot fixing bracket 21 having a contact surface 22 for abutment with a battery case wall. The surface 22 may be flat or provided with ribs which are located between the zones 27 and are fused during welding. A central gripping flange 23 is provided. Alternatively or additionally, the thermoplastic member is a handle bracket 31 having or two bosses 32 supporting a carrying rope 33. Suitable ultrasonic welding apparatus, Fig. 1, comprises a welding tool 6, a magnetostrictive transducer 13 and a transformer 16. The transducer 13 is cooled by water supplied through pipes 18. Vertical adjustment of the tool 6 is made by manually rotating a handle 12 on a shaft 9 having a pinion thereon meshing with a rack 18 on a supporting rod 7. The member 6 is held within the welding zones 27, Fig. 2, for a time sufficient to allow the thermoplastic material to flow together and is deactivated to permit solidification before removal thereof.
