Abstract

1514914 Seaming non-metallic sheet material KERRY ULTRASONICS Ltd 21 May 1975 [2 July 1974] 29218/74 Heading B5K Two plastics members 10, 12 are sealed by supporting the member 10 along the line of the intended seal on a supporting surface 15 and engaging the member 12 by the output element 17 of an ultrasonic transducer along the line of the intended seal, either the surface 15 or the working face of the element 17 being provided with at least one continuous rib 16 extending along the line of the intended seal, the rib 16 having a width which is small relative to the width of the intended seal to serve as an energy director to initiate melting of the plastics material, the melting spreading to the full width of the seal defined by the engaging areas of the surface 15 and the element 17. As shown, a plastics container body 10, containing a liquid 13, is placed in an annular support 14 with a peripheral flange 11 resting on a surface 15 provided with a raised rib 16 which is triangular in section. A flat plastics closure 12 is laid over the flange 11 and an annular horn 17 forming the output element of an ultrasonic transducer is advanced towards the support 14. As the plastics material melts, the rib 16 penetrates into the plastics material to form a narrow groove in the underside of the flange 11. In modifications (not shown), (a) two or more concentric ribs are provided, (b) the rib(s) is/are formed on the working face 18 of the horn 17 instead of on the surface 15, and (c) the rib is square or rectangular in section. Preferably, the height of the rib is related to the overall thickness of the material to be welded, along the line of intended seal, e.g. for high impact polystyrene, the height of the rib may be approximately one-third of the thickness of the material and, for polypropylene, the height of the rib may be approximately half the thickness of the material.
