Abstract

1347573 Frequency measurement; variable frequency dividers RACAL INSTRUMENTS Ltd 15 June 1972 [15 June 1971] 27860/71 Headings G4A and G4H The division factor of a variable frequency divider is set to a value inversely dependent on an unknown frequency and directly dependent on a fixed frequency which is also fed into the divider, whereby the output of the divider is a frequency which is a multiple of the unknown frequency. The higher frequency from the divider is counted, enabling a more accurate frequency measurement of the unknown lower frequency. In Fig. 2, ignoring the sealing produced by dividers 6, 12, the fixed frequency F is gated to counter 22, comprising stages 22A, 22B, for one period of the unknown frequency Fx. The most significant stage 22A of the counter 22 at the end of the counting period controls the division factor of divider 14A according to the count therein. The count in the lower significant stage 22B is inserted in complementary form into a comparator 30, which contains a cycling counter driven by the output of the divider 14A, whereby during counting from zero up to the count in stage 22B a one bit counter 26 is inserted to increase the division factor by one, the counter 26 being out of circuit for the rest of each cycle. The output frequency FO of the divider is then a fixed multiple of the input frequency Fx.
