Abstract

The frequency of an alternating voltage is measured by apparatus comprising a frequency doubler (2, Fig. 1, not shown), a frequency dividing electronic counter (6), switching means (3, 4, 5) to apply either the frequency to be measured or the doubled frequency to the counter (6), the switching means being set by the output signal from the counter, a reference frequency generator (7), a frequency comparator (8) receiving the reference frequency and the output from the counter (6), a counter (13) driven one way or the other according to the relative frequency values of the inputs to the comparator (8) and a coincidence detector (14) which, when the counts in the two counters are the same, switches the switching means to the other setting. In operation the frequency f to be measured is first applied to the counter (6). When the count in this counter equals that in counter (13) the first switch (3) closes and the second switch (4) opens so that a frequency of 2f is applied to the counter (6) until it reaches its full capacity. The switch (3) then re-opens and the cycle repeats. The output from the divider is compared for frequency with the reference frequency. The comparator output adjusts the counter (13) until a balance is achieved and the value in this counter can then be used to determine the frequency f. A circuit working on principles similar to those described above may be provided to enable one of a number of different reference frequencies to be selected.
