1346832 Distilling hydrocarbons COSDEN OIL & CHEMICAL CO 24 Sept 1971 [5 Oct 1970] 44685/71 Heading C5E In order to inhibit polymerization during the distillation of crude divinylbenzene, the liquid phase is contacted with a gas containing molecular oxygen, such as air. Oxygen-enriched or oxygen-reduced air, or pure oxygen, may also be used. A chemical polymerization inhibitor such as sulphur or tertiary butyl catechol may be added to the mixture prior to the distillation. In distilling crude divinylbenzene in the pretence of sulphur and TBC, the amount of oxygen employed is preferably 1À0 Î 10<SP>-5</SP> to 2À0 x 10<SP>-3</SP> moles per minute per mole of divinylbenzene contained in the distillation apparatus.
