Abstract

1346473 Radio navigation TULL AVIATION CORP 12 July 1971 [13 July 1970 (2)] 32557/71 Heading H4D The system described in Specification 1,317,407 is modified by adding a fixed frequency transmission from the ground station and utilizing it in the aircraft receiver to control automatically the frequency of the local oscillator in the microwave converter, a gate circuit preferably being included to inhibit the input to a following frequency translator unless a fixed frequency signal of sufficient amplitude is being received. The utilization of the fixed frequency transmission-and which is the same for all ground stations-means (a) that the receiver need not be tuned as an airport is approached, (b) the transmission from the desired airport will control the local oscillator even when within receiving range of other airports, and (c) Doppler-effect tuning error is eliminated. Preferably all ground station fixed frequency signals are synchronized with a single master station. A further embodiment includes means for receiving guidance signals transmitted in a second, higher, microwave band.
