Abstract
1346387 Centrifugal separator PENNWALT CORP 19 Sept 1972 [23 Sept 1971] 43427/72 Heading B2P [Also in Division F2] A centrifuge, of the type having an internal helical screw conveyor 18 within the centrifuge bowl 14 which is mounted in an internally gas-pressurised casing 12, is provided with a lubricating and sealing arrangement for lubricating a bearing 72 located between the bowl and the conveyor. This arrangement includes a rotatable lubricant reservoir 64 located within the hub 20 of the conveyor and having a flexible wall 56 exposed at its external surface 57 to the internal gas pressure transmitted from the separation chamber 28 within the bowl via a passageway 84a to pressurise lubricant contained in the reservoir. The reservoir is bounded by perforated walls 52, 58. The lubricant is supplied in operation by the action of centrifugal force from the reservoir via an annular chamber 66 and a passageway 68 to an annular bearing cavity 70 extending between annular seals 74a, 74b and 74c, 74d disposed between the bowl and the conveyor on each side of the bearing 72. The gaseous pressure is transmitted via the flexible wall 56 and the lubricant to bearing cavity 70 and acts upon the interior surfaces 80b, 80c of seals 74b, 74c. The gaseous pressure also acts upon the exterior surface 76a of seal 74a via a passageway 77, and upon exterior surface 76d of seal 74d via passageways 79, 81. The gaseous pressure is also transmitted to annular spaces 98a, 98b between the seals 74a, 74b and 74c, 74d respectively via passageways 88a, 88b. Thus the pressure is substantially equalized on opposite sides of the bearing seals resulting in better sealing. The seals 74a arid 74d are primarily used to keep solids discharging through opening 32 in the bowl away from the seals 74b and 74c respectively. During operation, lubricant gradually leaks past seals 74b, 74c into the annular spaces 98a, 98b, and is discharged by the action of centrifugal force through passageways 88a, 88b into a stationary collecting chamber 84. A passageway 94 extends from space 106 below the chamber 84 to the tangential discharge opening 44 for separated liquid.
