Abstract
1345939 Jointing LOCTITE CORP 6 Aug 1971 [13 Aug 1970] 37155/71 Heading B3V [Also in Divisions F3 and C3] A process for sealing or bonding surfaces in an assembly containing an explosive composition comprises applying to at least one of the surfaces an anaerobic composition containing a polymerizable acrylate ester of the formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> is H or a monovalent hydrocarbon group containing up to 4 carbon atoms, R<SP>2</SP> is a hydrocarbon group containing at least 2 carbon atoms, and n is an integer equal to at least 1 corresponding to the valency of the group R<SP>2</SP>, in admixture with an organic hydroperoxide polymerization initiator; placing the said surfaces in a fixed relationship such that air or oxygen is excluded from the anaerobic composition; and maintaining the said surfaces in such fixed relationship until the anaerobic composition has cured to seal and bond the said surfaces. The term "organic hydroperoxide" is used to include other peroxides such as cyclohexyl hydroxycyclohexyl peroxide and t-butyl perbenzoate which decompose or hydrolyse to form hydroperoxides in situ. The anaerobic composition preferably also includes a polymerization accelerator, e.g. a tertiary amine or certain secondary amines, an organic sulphimide, succinimide, phthalimide or formamide. Other optical components include bisphenol A difumarate (a thickener), polymerization inhibitors, e.g. quinones and hydroquinone, plasticizers, dyes, adhesive agents and thixotropic agents. The process is particularly applicable to the sealing of threaded assemblies and can be used with assemblies containing explosives of the nitrate ester type, e.g. "Minol" (mixture of ammonium nitrate and TNT), "Tetryl" (N- methyl - N - nitro - 2,4,6 - trinitroaniline), and nitro cellulose/nitro glycerine mixtures. In exemplified tests, the threaded assemblies comprise steel and zinc plated fasteners (nut and bolt combinations), and a threaded sealing ring of standard steel for a large bomb assembly. Applications for the invention include bombs, landmines, small munitions, fuzes &c.
