Abstract

1345889 Treating I C engine charge FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 3 Aug 1971 [2 Sept 1970] 36391/71 Heading F1B An air cleaning and fuel vapour collecting system connected to the intake 20, Fig.1, of a carburetter 12 having a fuel bowl 14 vented through tube 21, comprises an air cleaner 22 containing a filter element 28, and vapour adsorption means 46 connected via conduit 42 to the cleaner 22. When the engine is switched off after a period of running, fuel vapour created in bowl 14 by the heat of the engine, passes through tube 21, conduit 38, cleaner 22, and conduit 42 into the means 46 where it is adsorbed and temporarily stored by a bed 44 of activated carbon. A baffle 35 may be provided to prevent direct flow of the fuel vapour to the cleaner inlet 30. Alternatively, the baffle may be emitted and the conduit 38 connected to the lower region of the cleaner, Fig.3 (not shown). When the engine is re-started, the stored fuel vapour is drawn from the means 46 into the carburetter intake for delivery to the associated engine, by an auxiliary flow of air supplied through inlet 54. Fuel vapour from other sources, e.g. the fuel tank of an associated vehicle, may be delivered to means 46 via tube 56. The main air flow delivered into cleaner 22 via inlet 30, can be mixed with exhaustheated air delivered through conduit 32 controlled by a thermostatically-actuated valve 34.
